TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono confirmed that Jakarta still maintains its status as a special capital region (DKI), as the bill on the city’s future special status (DKJ) following the capital's move to East Kalimantan is still under deliberation by the House of Representatives (DPR).

“The DKJ bill has not been passed yet. It's still in progress. So [Jakarta] is still the capital. It's still DKI,” Heru said in Ragunan, South Jakarta, on Friday, March 8, 2024.

Previously, House Legislative Body chairman Supratman Andi Agtas said Jakarta’s status as the national capital city would expire on February 15, 2024, according to Law No. 29 of 2007. This was the implication of the Law on National Capital that was promulgated on February 15, 2022.

“[The law states that Jakarta] will lose its status on February 15,” he said in the Parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Tuesday, March 5, 2024.

Supratman referred to Article 41 (2) of the IKN Law, which states that Law No. 29 of 2007 on Jakarta as the National Capital shall be amended no later than two years after its promulgation.

The Palace recently confirmed that Jakarta would remain the national capital until a presidential decree is issued on the relocation of the capital to the Nusantara Capital City (IKN) in East Kalimantan. He said this was based on Article 39 of the IKN Law.

“When the presidential decree will be issued depends entirely on the president's authority,” said Dini Purwono, President Joko Widodo's special staff for legal affairs on Thursday, March 7.
