TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - Mount Merapi, located on the border of Yogyakarta and Central Java, ejected six hot clouds of avalanches in a row towards the southwest on Friday morning, January 19.

Agus Budi Santoso, the head of the Center for Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development (BPPTKG), confirmed that a series of hot cloud avalanches occurred between 06:59 and 07:23 local time.

“The estimated maximum launch distance is 2,000 meters to the southwest or Bebeng River,” he said as quoted from Antara on Friday, January 19.

The volcano could be seen shrouded in thick clouds during the eruption. People are strongly advised to stay away from the predetermined danger zones.

From 00:00 to 06:00 local time, BPPTKG also recorded three hot cloud avalanches coming from the volcano with a sliding distance of 3,000 meters to the southwest.

Until now, the agency has maintained the volcano’s status at Alert Level III or Siaga.

In anticipation of the potential danger of the eruption, the BPPTKG called on the public to refrain from doing any activities in potential danger areas.

Lava and hot clouds from Mount Merapi could also affect areas in the south-southwest area, including the Boyong River at a maximum distance of five kilometers and the Bedog, Krasak, and Bebeng Rivers at a maximum distance of seven kilometers.
