TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia's volcano Mount Marapi in Agam Regency and Tanah Datar Regency, West Sumatra erupted on Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023. West Sumatran Search and Rescue team reported that 22 have been killed in the eruption until Tuesday evening.

The Head of Vulcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation Center (PVMBG) at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources Hendra Gunawan stated that the eruption was unpredictable, causing a lack of an early warning system.

Just how many active volcanoes are there in Indonesia?

Citing Multiplatform Application for Geohazard Mitigation and Assessment in Indonesia, or MAGMA Indonesia, Indonesia houses the world's largest number of active volcanoes at 127, with 69 of them monitored by the PVMBG.

Active volcanoes in Indonesia are divided into three classes, namely types A, B, and C. A-type volcanoes have a recorded history of erupting at least once after 1600 AD, amounting to 76 volcanoes in the country. B-type volcanoes are those in solfataric phase and erupted at least once since 1600 AD, while C-type volcanoes have no recorded history of eruption. There are 30 B-type and 21 C-type volcanoes in Indonesia.
