TEMPO.CO, Kupang - The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) appealed to the people living near the foot of Mount Ile Lewotolok in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) to be aware of the dangers of lava flows during the rainy season.

“People residing near the valleys or rivers originating from the peak of Mount Ile Lewotolok should always be aware of the potential danger of lava flows, especially during the rainy season,” Stanis Ara Kian, the head of the volcano’s observation post in Ile Ape district, Lembata Regency, said on Tuesday, Dec. 5.

Currently, he said, the volcano is at alert level II or Waspada. The volcano has experienced a series of eruptions, sending columns of ash into the air at varying heights of 200 to 700 meters.

Therefore, people are strongly advised to be cautious during heavy rains, as it is feared that the rain will bring hot lava from the summit.

There are at least three villages at the foot of the volcano, namely Lamawolo Village, Lamatokan Village, and Jontana Village.

Stanis also stressed that people are not allowed to approach the active volcano within a two-kilometer radius of the mountain's crater.

Additionally, as the eruption of Mount Ile Lewotolok continues, bringing volcanic material down to the villages, people are recommended to wear masks to protect their mouths and noses, and other coverings to protect their eyes and skin from the ash rain.
