TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Nawawi Pomolango is scheduled to be sworn into office as Acting Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) today, Monday, Nov. 27, 2023, at the Presidential Palace.

"The Oath-taking of Nawawi Pomolango as the Acting Chairman of KPK will be conducted in front of President Joko Widodo or Jokowi," said the Presidential Special Staff Coordinator Ari Dwipayana in a statement on Sunday evening.

Jokowi signed the Presidential Decree on Friday evening to temporarily suspend Firli Bahuri as KPK Chairman due to involvement in an extortion case against former Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo.

In the decree, president Jokowi appointed Nawawi Pomolango as Acting Chairman of KPK.

A brief profile on Nawawi Pomolango

Since 2019, Nawawi Pomolango has been acting as Deputy Chairman of KPK. He was critical of Firli Bahuri's leadership in the anti-corruption agency, claiming Firli was a one-man show in KPK for his unilateral decisions.

Later, while participating in a fit and proper test as a candidate to lead KPK, Nawawi expressed harsh criticisms against the commission, claiming that KPK's phone tapping was excessive and that KPK's preventive programs were nothing but going around in anti-corruption buses.

Nawawi started his justice career in 1992 in Soasio Tidore District Court in Central Halmahera Regency. He started to emerge on the public's radar for his involvement in handling corruption cases while working as a Judge in Central Jakarta District Court from 2011 to 2013. He was well-known after sentencing the former Constitutional Justice Patrialis Akbar to eight years in prison for a bribery case.
