TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi said the 50-megawatt capacity Solar Power Plant (PLTS), which is starting to be constructed in the country’s new capital city or IKN, can reduce carbon emissions by up to 104,000 tons per year.

“This is a pioneer of renewable energy power generation in IKN,” he said during the project groundbreaking ceremony in IKN, East Kalimantan, on Thursday, Nov.2.

The power plant could produce about 93 gigawatt hours (GWh) of green energy per year, he informed. In addition to using solar energy, the power system in the new capital will also utilize the potential of hydropower from rivers and lakes in the area.

“The implementation of EBT (new renewable energy) in IKN is in line with the forest city concept of IKN as the nation's capital—which is green and environmentally friendly,” the President said.

At least ten projects in IKN were inaugurated this week. The construction of several projects in IKN began in September.

Aside from the PLTS project, Jokowi also led the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction project of Bank Indonesia’s office complex today.

The estimated investment value of this week's groundbreaking was Rp12.5 trillion, bringing the total investment to date to Rp23 trillion. The government projected that the investment figure in IKN will reach Rp45 trillion by December.
