A 100-200 meter white smoke emitted from the peak of Mount Slamet was visible from the Slamet Volcano Observation Post, Gambuhan Village, Pulosari District, Pemalang Regency, Central Java, on Friday, February 14, 2020. TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Circulating news about the eruption of Mount Slamet in Central Java is a hoax, the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) confirmed on Thursday, Nov. 2, urging people to stay calm and not to be easily influenced by rumors related to the activity of Java's largest volcano.

“Until now, the alert status of Mount Slamet is still at Level II or Waspada (Caution),” the PVMBG’s Head of the Slamet Volcano Observation Post (PGA), Muhammad Rusdi, said in Purwokerto, Banyumas Regency, on Thursday.

According to him, the current volcanic activity of Mount Slamet, which is situated in the Banyumas, Purbalingga, Pemalang, Tegal, and Brebes regencies, is still fluctuating.

“PVMBG still recommends to the public and tourists to refrain from having activities within a two-kilometer radius of the summit,” Rusdi added.

He clarified that the recent photos of the volcano's eruption circulating on social networking sites were actually taken in 2014 when its alert status was level III or Standby.

“People needing the latest information on Mount Slamet can reach us at the PGA Slamet Post, access the official PVMBG’s social media, or you can also contact the local BPBD (Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency),” Rusdi concluded.
