TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Constitutional Court (MK) officially announced on Monday the formation of an Honorary Council within its body to investigate the allegation of an ethics code violation by MK Chief Judge Anwar Usman.

"We have decided on a meeting between judges to form the Honorary Council to study at least seven reports [on Anwar Usman]," said MK Spokesperson Enny Nurbaningsih in a press conference in Jakarta on Monday.

Earlier, Anwar Usman and a number of MK judges were reported for ethics code violation allegations regarding the decision on presidential and vice presidential candidates' age limit for the 2024 general election.

The decision fell in favor of President Jokowi's son and Anwar's nephew, Solo's Mayor Gibran Rakabuming.

Enny explained three people will become members of the Honorary Council, including former MK Chief of Judge Jimly Asshidique, academics and legal expert Bintan Saragih, and Constitutional Judge Wahiduddin Adams.

The composition was based on Article 4 of Constitutional Court Regulation No. 1 of 2023 on Honorary Council. According to Enny, Jimly will represent the public, Bintan Saragih represent academics, and Wahiduddin Adams will represent the active judge aspect.

The appointment of these three members of the Honorary Council will be inked by MK Chief Judge Anwar Usman today.

Honorary Council members, Enny added, will examine the reports without conflict of interests, despite being appointed by Anwar Usman, one of the people involved in the case. Enny also claimed there would be no further intervention on the Honorary Council of MK.

According to the regulation, the Honorary Council would have 30 days to examine and decide the case with an allocated 15 days of extension if needed.

Meanwhile, legal observer Denny Indrayana and one of the parties reporting the MK Chief Judge earlier believed that the decision regarding the presidential and vice presidential candidate age limit should have been declared void for conflict of interests.
