TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo stated that Indonesia called for an immediate stop to violence in the Israel-Palestine conflict to avoid more casualties. "The root of this conflict, the occupation of Palestinian territories by Israel, has to be resolved in accordance with the parameters set by the UN," Jokowi stated in a press release received on Tuesday, October 10, 2023.

The war between Hamas and Israel has killed thousands. Hamas is a nationalist and Islamic militant group fighting for Palestinian liberation.

On October 7, the resistant group Hamas established an attack on Israelian cities in what was dubbed as the deadliest attack since the Yom Kippur war 50 years prior. In retaliation, Israel fired airstrikes on Palestinian homes, tunnels, mosques, and the residence of Hamas officials in Gaza. Israel's retaliation killed more than 400 people, including 20 children, as decreed by PM Benjamin Nenyatahu.

"The price the Gaza Strip will pay will be a very heavy one that will change reality for generations," said Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant.

Indonesian Hospital in Beit Lahiya in the Gaza Strip was hit by Israel's airstrike on Saturday, as reported by WAFA, the Palestinian news agency. A medical staff was killed in the attack.

The president, in a press statement, claimed to have asked the Foreign Ministry and related agencies to take swift action to protect Indonesian nationals in the conflict zone.

Indonesian Foreign Ministry urged Indonesian nationals in Palestine and Israel to stay vigilant over the escalation of conflict in the Gaza Strip. The latest data reported that 45 Indonesian nationals are currently trapped in Palestine, with 10 in the Gaza Strip and 35 in the West Bank. Meanwhile, 230 Indonesian nationals were in the middle of a religious tour across Israel when the strike occurred.

As of now, the ministry confirmed no Indonesian nationals have fallen victim during the conflict. "We are coordinating with the Indonesian Embassies in Amman, Cairo, and Beirut to monitor the situation in Palestine and are preparing a contingency plan. Evacuation is a part of said contingency plan," said ministry spokesperson M. Iqbal in a written statement on Tuesday.
