TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Syahrul Yasin Limpo has officially resigned from his position as Agriculture Minister under President Joko Widodo or Jokowi cabinet following the legal process in an alleged corruption entangling the former.

Syahrul submitted his resignation to State Secretary Pratikno at the Merdeka Palace on Thursday afternoon, October 5, 2023. He was accompanied by the Minister of Environment and Forestry Siti Nurbaya Bakar, who is also his colleague in the National Democracy (Nasdem) Party.

“The reason behind my resignation is due to the legal process at hand and I have to be prepared seriously, though I hope there will be no stigma and perception that will judge me yet,” said Syahrul after submitting his resignation letter.

Syahrul Yasin Limpo has just arrived home on Wednesday from his working visit to Italy and Spain on September 24.

During his stay in Europe, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) raided his official residence in Jakarta and his private house in Makassar. KPK investigation team also did a search at Syahrul’s office at the Ministry of Agriculture.

From the raids in two cities, KPK confiscated Rp30 billion in cash, documents, and an Audi A6 car.

Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law, and Security Mahfud Md had previously received information regarding the suspect naming of Syahrul Yasin Limpo by KPK. "He (Syahrul) has been long named as a suspect," Mahfud said on October 4, 2023.

Tempo had also received the same information. Tempo’s sources said that KPK named Syahrul and two of his subordinates as suspects in alleged cases of extortion in office, gratification, and money laundering. The two people are Secretary General of Agriculture Ministry Kasdi Subagyo and Director of Agricultural Machine Tools Muhammad Hatta.

KPK spokesperson Ali Fikri confirmed the suspect naming by his office, yet he did not want to detail who the suspects were. "The entire process will be conveyed in full in due time," said Ali in Jakarta, on Thursday, September 28, 2023.

Syahrul Yasin Limpo visited Jakarta Metro Police earlier today to give statements to investigators on alleged extortion by KPK leaders.
