TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian President Joko Widodo or Jokowi stated that ASEAN must have the courage to self-evaluate, openly discuss problems, and jointly find solutions to the Myanmar crisis.

“We need more tactical and extraordinary efforts to implement the five-point consensus,” he said when opening the ASEAN Summit retreat session in Jakarta, on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, referring to the five-point consensus for Myanmar.

Adopted by ASEAN leaders in April 2021, the consensus calls for an immediate end to violence; a dialogue among all parties; appointment of special envoys; humanitarian assistance; and a visit by an ASEAN special envoy to Myanmar.

Jokowi said the peace plan would remain the main guideline for resolving the crisis. However, ASEAN must continue to push for inclusive national dialogue as the key to resolving the political crisis in the country.

In the past nine months as the chair of ASEAN, Indonesia has conducted more than 145 very intensive engagements with 70 stakeholders.

Jokowi also said that Indonesia has seen that trust has begun to emerge between one stakeholder and another, with the exception of the Myanmar military junta.
