TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Yusri Usman, an observer from the Center of Energy and Resources Indonesia (CERI), predicted that Indonesia may be able to export clean energy to Singapore in 2025.

“It is estimated that Indonesia can start exporting power produced from clean energy to Singapore around early 2025 because it has to prepare the infrastructure of underwater cable,” Yusri told Tempo on Thursday, August 3, 2023.

Yusri said Singapore will end the supply of dirty energy for its electricity needs in 2027. He mentioned that Singapore's need for renewable energy until 2020 reached 7.2 gigawatts.

“As we have confirmed to the company that has signed an MoU (memorandum of understanding) with a Singaporean energy company, the tariff [of electricity in Singapore] per kWh is 18 Singapore cents,” he explained.

On March 16, 2023, Yusri recalled that the governments of Indonesia and Singapore had agreed to trade electricity sourced from green energy, namely solar power plants (PLTS).

As previously reported, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said Singapore hoped to cooperate with Indonesia regarding the supply of electricity generated from clean, renewable energy. Luhut thus expected Indonesia to start exporting the commodity.

“They really hope to cooperate with Indonesia for electricity supply. Hopefully, we can start exporting because currently, 95-96 percent [of the electricity] still use fossils,” Luhut said in a written statement on Monday, June 5, 2023.

Editor's Note: The title had been revised from "Indonesia May be Able to Export Clean Energy to Singapore in 2025: CERI" to become "CERI Estimates Indonesia Can Export Clean Energy to Singapore in 2025."
