TEMPO.CO , Jakarta - An earthquake measured at magnitude 5.0 on the Richter scale hit North Sumatra, according to a recent report by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics (BMKG) on Monday, June 26, at 17:12 Western Indonesia Time (WIB).
BMKG head of earthquake and tsunami, Daryono, in a press statement, said that the earthquake originated on land at a depth of 81 kilometers and its epicenter was 34 kilometers southwest of Humbang Hasundutan District.
The main cause of the quake is observed to come from rock deformation activity in the Indo-Australian plate subducting under the island of Sumatra.
The agency called for calm and warned the public to remain vigilant with information that spreads online. He said the earthquake did not spark a tsunami early warning and minutes after the initial earthquake, had not shown signs of aftershocks.
