TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Mount Anak Krakatau (which translates to the child of Mount Krakatau, the offspring of its larger volcanic mountain), located in the Sunda Strait in the Lampung Province, has reportedly erupted volcanic ash that reached a vertical height of 1.5 kilometers. The Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG) reports suggest the eruption took place on Monday, 08:22 (Indonesia Western Time | WIB).

An official at the mountain’s monitoring post Jumono wrote in a statement that a “Thick white and darkish grey column was visible heading towards the Southeast region.”

This morning’s eruption did not produce any audible thumps but was recorded in the agency’s seismograph at a maximum of 70-millimeter amplitude that lasted roughly 3 minutes.

Anak Krakatau, which has a height of 157 meters above sea level, to date, is still at Level III (Alert) status since April 24, 2022.

PVMBG strongly recommends residents in the mountain’s vicinity not approach the volcano or move within a 5-kilometer radius of the active crater to avoid the impact of the eruption.

Eruptions have occurred repeatedly since the birth of Mount Anak Krakatau in June 1927, and have grown larger reaching a height of 157 meters above sea level.
