TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan voiced concern about public activities in the short-video app TikTok ahead of the 2024 Election. He warned users of popular video-sharing and live-streaming in the country not to use their accounts to engage in identity politics which could lead to dissension.

“Play TikTok properly, don't do unnecessary things. It’s okay to touch on politics but don’t [create content] that causes dispute. Use it to educate,” Luhut said at the TikTok Southeast Asia Impact Forum in Jakarta, as quoted from a press release, Thursday, June 15, 2023.

He called on TikTok content creators to be more proud of the country. Indonesia certainly faces problems, he said, but the government under President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has been running well for the past eight years.

At the forum, Luhut claimed that Indonesia's economic resilience is one of the best among the G20 countries amid a global economic slowdown. He mentioned that the country’s digital economic growth reached US$77 billion in 2022.

“Indonesia's younger generation must understand how wealthy our country is. No one can look down on our country,” Luhut said.

In front of TikTok CEO Shou Chew, Luhut said the government is prioritizing digitalization to boost efficiency. So Indonesia welcomes TikTok to invest in the country. “Doing business here is welcomed but please don’t go into politics,” he said.
