TEMPO.CO, Bandung - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) warned West Java of the potential for moderate to heavy intensity rain accompanied by lightning and strong winds this week, June 12-18, 2023. Such bad weather may occur on a local scale and for a short duration.

“It is estimated that it will occur between noon and night,” said Head of the West Java Climatology Station Rakhmat Prasetia in a written statement, Sunday, June 11, 2023.

Today, the Bogor, Sukabumi, and Cianjur areas will likely be hit by heavy downpours with lightning and strong winds. In the following days, the potential for rain extends to Purwakarta, Greater Bandung, Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Pangandaran.

“There is no potential for heavy rain on Friday and Sunday in West Java,” Rakhmat added.

Based on the monitoring of seasonal conditions in the West Java region, he elaborated that some areas have entered the dry season while others are still experiencing a transition.

People and related agencies are asked to stay vigilant against the occurrence of hydrometeorological disasters during the transition period, such as hail, strong winds, or tornadoes.

Similar extreme weather conditions occurred last week, June 5-10, 2023, in Bogor, Depok, Purwakarta, Subang, Cianjur, Bekasi, Sukabumi, Greater Bandung, Garut, Tasikmalaya, Ciamis, Pangandaran, Majalengka, and Kuningan.

BMKG monitored that El Nino conditions in the third ten days of April were still weak but the trends may increase in July. Additionally, the tropical cyclone system is currently undetected in Indonesian waters. However, there is the potential for high waves on the south coast of West Java which may reach 6 meters high until mid-June 2023.
