TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Police on Tuesday arrested a syndicate of thieves that notoriously steal copper bolts and wires that are used for the Jakarta-Bandung High-speed railway, specifically at the project’s Karawang area in West Java.

The Karawang Police Deputy Chief, Prasetyo Purbo Nurcahyo, said the six suspects were nabbed on Thursday.

“They were arrested in link to the theft at the PT Kereta Cepat Indonesia national strategic project,” said Prasetyo in the case expose’ at Karawang on June 6.

Out of the six suspects, one of them was previously hired as security personnel for the railway project.

According to Prasetyo, the case was uncovered when officers patrolled the location and found that the catenary overhead copper cables and bolts attached to the fast train at that location were missing. The thieves used the moment when electricity at the project’s location was turned off to steal the critical railway parts.

After receiving the report, police immediately conducted an investigation and questioned a number of possible suspects identifying suspects' characteristic features, before making the arrest.

All suspects are currently detained at the Karawang Police headquarters and face multiple charges with a total of up to 11 years behind bars for violating Article 363 and Article 480 of the Criminal Code (KUHP).
