TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Trade Ministry’s Director General of Domestic Trade, Isy Karim, stated that the price of chicken eggs is now starting to drop. Based on the Market and Basic Needs Monitoring System (SP2KP), the national average price of the commodity as of today, June 6, is Rp31,900 per kilogram.

“When compared to last week, it has started to show a downward trend,” Isy told Tempo on Tuesday, June 6, 2023.

He revealed that the Trade Ministry monitored the price developments of basic necessities, including eggs, in 483 regencies/cities throughout Indonesia through SP2KP.

According to him, only 82 regencies/cities recorded an increase in egg price, 227 regencies/cities had a fixed price, while the other 119 regencies/cities recorded price reductions.

On this basis, the government is optimistic that the price will decline although it may not return to its original level. “Besides, consumers have more choices of protein sources during the Eid al-Adha period,” Isy mentioned the Islamic Day of Sacrifice when Muslims slaughter animals such as cows, goats, and sheep.

Previously on June 1, Isy said that the surge in egg prices had occurred since Eid al-Fitr 2023 which fell on April 22. “We can say that the price of eggs has increased since Eid and has not shown any signs of declining,” he said in a written statement on Thursday evening, June 1.

He explained that the national average price for chicken eggs as of May 31 was Rp32,100 per kilogram. This figure jumped 6.64 percent compared to last month's price.
