TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Trade Ministry is mulling raising the retail price ceiling (HET) of the government’s cooking oil product, Minyakita, by Rp1,000 to Rp15,000 per liter. However, the ministry would allow traders to sell it at a lower price, such as Rp14,500 per liter.
Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan alias Zulhas said the rising HET of Minyakita needed to be discussed further in a meeting with the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.
“It should be Rp14,000 [per liter]. But we should adjust it with the inflation as well. We haven't decided yet, we still have to meet with the Coordinating Minister for the Economy. So, it’s still Rp14,000 to Rp14,500, which is still tolerable,” Zulhas explained when met at Pasar Senen, Central Jakarta, today, Nov. 39.
The minister inspected the prices of basic commodities ahead of the Christmas and New Year holidays when commodity prices usually soar.
When met on the same occasion, the ministry’s Domestic Trade Director General Isy Karim said that the ministry was still conducting an in-depth study regarding the plan to increase the HET of Minyakita.
He stressed the importance of assessing the possible impact of the price hike on the community before the decision is finalized. “So, for now, the current HET remains valid. There are indeed price differences in the markets,” Isy said.
