TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta is gearing up for its 496th anniversary celebrations. A number of events will be held to celebrate the occasion, which is on June 22, and a few of them have even started since May 21.

“Let's celebrate the anniversary of Jakarta and protect this city which will become a global-scale business city,” said Jakarta Regional Secretary Joko Agus Setyono, who is also the anniversary’s organizing committee chairman.

The celebration will kick start with the release of 496 birds and the planting of dozens of Cempaka trees on May 21 as the call for all residents to participate in the transition of Jakarta as a global business city by improving quality and preserving the environment.

“The Jakarta Provincial Government in synergy with various parties will organize various activities as a series of the 496th anniversary celebrations,” Joko said.

This year’s anniversary carries the theme "Jakarta: Jadi Karya untuk Nusantara", which literally translates into 'work for the nation'. This theme means that the city is ready to optimize all of its resources to achieve people's welfare and sustainable development, as well as to become a barometer and a driver for progress for other regions in Indonesia.

The series of events is as follows:

- Jakarta Great Sale Festival on May 21 - July 21

- Literacy Activities on May 22 - June 22

- Semasa on June 4 - 6

- Pekan Raya Jakarta or Jakarta Fair (PRJ) on June 14 - July 16

- Jakarta Collaboration Festival on June 14 - July 16

- Jakreatifest on June 16 - July 3

- Indonesia Comic Con Pop Asia on June 23 - 25

- Monas Week on June 20 - 25

- Kota Tua Community Parade on June 24

- Pameran Arsip (Archive Exhibition) on June 25 - 30

- Peak events, including the ceremony of Jakarta's 496th Anniversary, the pilgrimage ceremony of Heroes Cemetery, and the Jakarta Legislative Council or DPRD Plenary Session on June 22.

Joko thus invited the public, including the business players, to celebrate Jakarta's anniversary by displaying related attributes in their areas.
