TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) head branch Said Abdullah on Wednesday believes the electability of future presidential candidate and current Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo will surpass Prabowo Subianto.

His confidence came after the latest survey conducted by the Kompas Litbang (research and development) places Ganjar second below Prabowo with 22.8 percent electability.

Abdullah compared the time when the two candidates were officially declared to run for the presidency. According to Said, Ganjar was only declared a month ago on April 21, while, Prabowo, was nominated as a presidential candidate nine months prior and another candidate in Anies Baswedan declared presidency seven months ago.

"We will see ahead of October, God willing, Ganjar's electability at 45 percent can surpass Mr. Prabowo," Abdullah said to Tempo on Wednesday, May 24.

In addition, he said that both Prabowo and Anies had already carried out unofficial political campaigns around Indonesia. Meanwhile, Ganjar has only visited five provinces in Indonesia in preparation for the election.

Introducing Ganjar Through PDIP Networks

He said PDIP would continue to introduce Ganjar throughout the country with the help of cadres, volunteers, and the United Development Party (PPP), which has become a partner for the 2024 election. He claims Ganjar has great potential to be accepted by the public.

"We will work more systematically to deliver growth to his electability, and we believe that Ganjar Pranowo's potential to be accepted in the hearts of the people is wider open," he said.

According to previous reports, the electability of Gerindra Party Chairman Prabowo Subianto overtook that of Ganjar Pranowo in the Kompas Litbang (research and development) survey conducted on April 29-May 10. In the survey, Prabowo excelled with an electability of 24.5 percent, followed by Ganjar with 22.8 percent, and Anies Baswedan who was further behind with an electability of 13.6 percent.

Prabowo's electability increased by 6.4 percent compared to the January 2023 survey which was at 18.1 percent. Meanwhile, Ganjar experienced a 2.5 percent decrease in his electability from 25.3 percent in January 2023. Anies Baswedan’s electability barely changed from the previous survey results of 13.1 percent or only increased by 0.5 percent.

Prabowo was able to overtake Ganjar for the first time after the Central Java governor issued a statement refusing the arrival of the Israeli football team to play in the U-20 World Cup that Indonesia was supposed to host before it was revoked by FIFA.

“The backlash due to this affected Ganjar Pranowo’s electability rate," said Kompas Research and Development statement on Wednesday, May 24

The survey involved 1,200 respondents that were randomly chosen across 38 Indonesian provinces. The survey has a 2.83 percent margin of error and a 95 percent confidence level.
