TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded a large earthquake outside the Indonesian territory at 09:57 Friday morning, May 19. The tectonic earthquake struck the southeastern region of the Loyalty Islands in New Caledonia, Pacific Ocean.

The results of the analysis show that this earthquake has a renewal of magnitude 7.8. The epicenter of the earthquake was located at coordinates 23.19° South Latitude and 170.70° East Longitude, precisely in the sea with a depth of 37 km.

This earthquake was reported to have triggered a small tsunami on the tide gauge on Mare Island, which was recorded as high as 15 cm at 10:33 West Indonesian time.

"However, the analysis results of tsunami modeling by BMKG show that this small tsunami will not affect Indonesian territory so that our people do not need to worry about the tsunami threat from the earthquake in the Loyalty Islands," Daryono, head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Center, in a written statement Friday.

Monitoring results until 11:55 WIB showed that this earthquake was followed by six significant aftershocks with magnitudes M4.9 to M6.3.
