TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno responded to Bali Governor I Wayan Koster’s plan to impose a tourist quota system in order to prevent low-quality tourists on the island.

Sandiaga said he has communicated with the Bali provincial government and would carry out in-depth investigations. He also deployed a team to conduct a study.

“I positively think that the Governor wants to maintain sustainability and customs, and Bali is focused on quality and sustainable tourism,” Sandiaga said in The Weekly Brief with Sandi Uno which was held virtually on Monday, May 8, 2023. “But this quota system has never been known in tourism.”

Sandiaga cited an example of the system implementation in France and the United States. According to him, the system is only applied in places with very limited capacity. “Not in the scope of tourism.”

Nevertheless, Sandiaga would explore Bali Governor's plan to prevent public confusion. Moreover, the ministry was targeted to attract 8.5 million tourists including 4.5 million tourists in Bali.

“So there wouldn't be polemics in the mass media. I sent a special team to investigate,” Sandiaga Uno said.

Bali Governor I Wayan Koster on Friday, May 5, said he would soon issue a local regulation regarding the implementation of an international tourist quota system to screen quality tourists.

“It’s tourism control so that it won’t be cheap mass tourism as we have seen in recent cases. Because of this, a quota system will be imposed for tourists visiting Bali. It’s not yet enacted, [we’ll issue] a regional regulation first,” Wayan Koster said as quoted from Antara.
