Deputy Law Minister Denies Business Monopoly Practice of Yasonna Laoly's Son in Prison

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Minister of Law and Human Rights Edward Omar Sharif Hiariej denied rumors that Minister Yasonna Laoly's son, Yamitema Laoly, monopolized business in correctional facilities. He stated that prisons partner with many foundations.

Eddy also denied accusations that Yamitema is involved in drug trafficking in prisons.

Apart from the Jeera Foundation owned by Yamitema, he mentioned that there are other foundations running businesses within prisons, such as the Maharani Foundation and Al Barokah.

“And what the foundations do is having a partnership and working together, as well as conducting coaching the residents (prisoners), including on music, painting, crafts, and so on,” he said when met at the ministry’s office, Tuesday, May 2.

According to Eddy, the partnership is aimed at assisting prisoners to be empowered so that when they return to society, they will be of benefit.

The issue of business monopoly in prison committed by Yamitema Laoly started from a video of Uya Kuya's interview with actor Tio Pakusadewo which made rounds on social media. In the one-minute video, Tio recalled his jail time for a drug case some time ago.

He revealed that there were illegal practices in prison, and that include drug trafficking. The 59-year-old actor even said there was a drug factory inside the prison involving the prison head and the warden.

Tio said that the drug trafficking resembled a cartel and the son of a minister was involved in this practice. However, he declined to name the minister in question.

The video was re-uploaded on a Twitter account @PartaiSocmed. The account mentioned that the minister's child is the son of Law and Human Rights Minister Yasonna Laoly, Yamitema Laoly, who is the chairman of PT Natur Palas Indonesia with its Jeera Foundation which monopolizes the cooperative and canteen business in several large prisons.
