TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Greenpeace Indonesia’s climate and energy campaigner Bondan Andriyanu on Wednesday called the need to pay attention to the source of Jakarta’s recent poor air quality, which he underlined comes from the emissions produced by motorized vehicles and non-transportation.

The IQAir index recently categorized the capital city’s air quality as unhealthy for sensitive groups by logging 134 at the AQI US index. The city’s PM 2.5 particulate indicator reached 49,1 µgram/m3.

“This means it is crucial to holistically control the source of air pollutants, whether that being a moving or non-moving source,” said Andriyanu to Tempo on April 26.

This phenomenon, he recalled, is reminiscent of the air pollution lawsuit that the public won against the city administration. “It aligns with the judge’s order in the air pollution court verdict that was won by the people.”

On September 16, 2021, the Central Jakarta District Court eventually found that the defendants of the case, namely President Joko Widodo, the Environmental and Forestry Minister, the Home Affairs Minister, the Health Minister, and the Jakarta Governor, had provenly acted against the law.

Among the many court orders, it partially granted the plaintiff’s lawsuit by requiring the defendants to monitor the law on pollution and impose sanctions against actors who violate those laws in terms of maintaining the capital city’s air quality, including motorized vehicles and businesses and activities that do not meet emissions standards.
