TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) on Monday stated that there were unusual atmospheric dynamics that caused Indonesia to experience hot extreme weather in the past few days.

The agency recorded that Ciputat of South Tangerang was the region with the highest daily maximum temperature on April 17, at 37.2 degrees Celsius. The UV Index in the country on Wednesday, April 26, was also predicted to reach the extreme hazard risk level.

Related to this, skin specialist Arini Widodo recommended people wear sunscreen with a minimum Sun Protection Factor (SPF) of 30 to protect the skin.

“Use sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 30. Make sure to apply it repeatedly, especially if you get sweat or go swimming, according to the instructions,” said Arini who is a graduate of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Indonesia (FKUI).

Arini also reminded people to choose waterproof products and those of provide broader spectrum coverage so it not only protects the skin from UVB rays, but also UVA.

Most adults usually need about an ounce of sunscreen cream or lotion to cover the entire body. Apply sunscreen to all areas of the skin that may be exposed to the sun, such as the face, neck, ears, tops of the legs, and feet. Then, reapply every two hours or as soon as possible after swimming or sweating.

“People who get sunburned usually don't use enough sunscreen, don't reapply it after being in the sun, or use expired products,” Arini added.
