TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A 6.6-magnitude earthquake centered in the sea on the North Coast of Java, on Friday afternoon, April 14, was felt in a number of regions including Kuta, Bali until Jakarta. The magnitude was then updated to 6.9.

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that the powerful quake occurred at 16:55 hours local time and was detected in the sea, 68 kilometers northwest of Tuban, East Java, at a depth of 632 kilometers. The agency’s modeling result confirmed that it had no potential to trigger a tsunami.

“It’s a deep focus earthquake in the Java Sea,” said the agency’s head of the quake and tsunami center, Daryono, adding that as of 17:30 hours local time, the agency did not record any aftershock activity.

For initial information, the strongest shaking was measured on the MMI level V in Kuta, Bali. Level V means the tremor is felt by almost all people; many people are awakened; objects are overturned; big objects are swinging; and pendulum clocks may stop.

In Gianyar of Bali Province, Mataram of NTB Province, Karangkates in Malang of East Java, Trenggalek of East Java, Tuban of East Java, and Garut of West Java, the tremor was measured on the MMI Level IV. This means the tremor is felt by many indoors.

BMKG also reported that the shaking was felt in Kediri, Malang, Surabaya, Tulungagung, and Pacitan at MMI Level III-IV, as well as in West Lombok, East Lombok, Central Lombok, North Lombok, Sumbawa, Dompu, and Bima at MMI Level III. Weaker shaking was reported in other regions, including Jakarta.
