TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The House of Representatives (DPR) officially passed the bill on the stipulation of the government regulations in lieu of law or Perpu Number 1 of 2022 concerning the amendments to Law Number 7 of 2017 on general elections into law today, April 4.

The Perpu was issued as a follow-up to the establishment of the four new autonomous regions (DOB) of Papua, namely South Papua, Central Papua, Papua Pegunungan, and Southwest Papua.

“Can the bill on Perpu No. 1 of 2022 on the amendments to Law No. 7 of 2017 on general elections be approved and passed into law?” House Speaker Puan Maharani asked lawmakers in attendance, followed by their statement of approval today.

Prior to being ratified, Ahmad Doli Kurnia as the chairman of the House’s government commission explained a number of changes to the norms in the Perpu.

Among the changes are related to the formation of election organizers in the new autonomous region provinces, the schedule for the election campaign, and elections in the new capital city of Nusantara in 2024.

“As the bill is approved, we hope that the 2024 election stages as stipulated in PKPU (the General Election Commission’s Regulation) Number 3 2022 will not be hampered and will run smoothly,” said Doli in the plenary session.

The government in today’s plenary session was represented by Home Affairs Minister Tito Karnavian. He explained that the Perpu for the general elections is a form of the DPR and the government’s commitment to providing legal certainty and supporting the 2024 election stages. “Especially for the four new autonomous regions in Papua and West Papua, and [it is] also a legal umbrella for all stakeholders in the holding of elections so that they run successfully and democratically,” Tito said.
