TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Fasting is not only abstaining from food and drinks but also from useless activities. Grand Imam of Indonesia’s biggest mosque Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta, Prof. Dr. K.H. Nasaruddin Umar, reminds people to refrain from laughing out loud, especially during Ramadan as it may reduce the reward of fasting.

“Also fast our mouths, not to speak negatively about other people, lie, and laugh out loud because all of these reduce and even eat away the reward of fasting,” said Nasaruddin in a webinar on Ramadan and fasting on Monday, March 27, 2023.

He said that the Prophet Muhammad SAW once rebuked people in a group who laughed out loud as conveyed by Imam Abu Laits As-Samarqandi in the Book of Tanbihul Ghafilin.

At that time Rasulullah SAW said, “Remember, by Allah in Whose Hand my soul is, if you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep often.”

“I remind all of us to be careful. Allah SWT removes the light of the face of people who like to laugh out loud, that's a hadith of the Prophet,” said Nasaruddin while highlighting comedy shows during the fasting month.

He also suggests avoiding meetings that could invite laughter, especially at night. Instead of laughing, fill the night with tears of repentance for the sins committed.

According to Nasaruddin, tears of repentance are one of the three tears that the fires of hell cannot touch. The other two are tears of longing for Allah SWT and protests of evil.

“At night, we should correct ourselves, on how many sins we have committed, on how little charity we have collected on the way to the afterlife,” the Grand Imam said.

Nasaruddin further calls on people to maximize all worship during Ramadan by not only performing obligatory worship such as fasting, praying, and giving alms but also exercising other sunnah worship such as sunnah prayers before and after the obligatory prayers, tarawih, tahajud, and witr.
