TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) in commemorating the 73rd World Meteorology Day, called for the general public to overcome the effects of climate change in a collective effort to prevent future hydrometeorology disasters and preserve the livelihood of future generations.

“Stern climate change control action is needed from all levels of society,” BMKG chief Dwikorita Karnawati said on Monday, March 20, 2023.

World Meteorology Day was established in 1961 to commemorate the World Meteorological Organization's creation on March 23, 1950. This year’s commemoration has adopted the theme "The future of weather, climate, and water across generations."

Dwikorita reminded the general public to start with the smallest gesture such as properly throwing waste, implementing the ‘reduce, reuse, and recycle’ mindset, and opting to walk over, cycle, or use public transportation that would help reduce the use of energy.

"Even though it might look insignificant, these concrete steps contribute hugely to slowing down the rate of climate change," said Dwikorita.

BMKG noted that 2016 was the hottest year for Indonesia, with an anomaly of 0.8°C during the period between 1981 and 2020. 2020 itself ranks as the second hottest year with an anomaly of 0.7°C, with 2019 ranking third with an anomaly value of 0.6 °C.
