TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) along with the West Australian government on Tuesday inked a memorandum of understanding which will explore partnership opportunities in critical minerals for the battery and electric vehicle (EV) industry.

Kadin chairperson Arsjad Rasjid on Tuesday said this MoU signing is a follow-up to previous commitments produced during the B20 and G20 back in November last year.

“The partnership between West Australia and Indonesia can open a huge chance in this sector,” said Arsyad in his statement on February 21.

In this collaboration, Kadin Indonesia and Western Australia will establish industrial partnerships in the supply chains of essential minerals in both regions, as well as share information on legal or regulatory updates. This MoU is expected to accelerate cooperation and stimulate the development of the global battery and EV industry.

On the other hand, Arsjad asserted that the two countries have an abundance of mineral wealth to produce EV batteries as Australia is a major supplier of lithium and Indonesia is the world's largest producer of nickel. Both are vital components in electric vehicle batteries.

"We must take advantage of this opportunity to jointly develop a battery manufacturing factory in Indonesia by utilizing Australian lithium and a profitable investment," he said.
