TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Sandiaga Uno announced that the trial run of the hike in the entrance fee of Borobudur Temple for educational and conservation tour packages has been completed. The entry fee for foreign tourists was planned to be set at Rp500,000, while for local tourists at Rp100,000.

Sandiaga said the ticket price, however, will be determined by PT Taman Wisata Candi (TWC) as the site management. “We fully hand over it to TWC to launch educational and conservation tour packages to the public,” said Sandiaga in Magelang in a written statement on Monday, February 6, 2023.

He claimed all trial processes had been ended and had provided input to PT TWC. The government and the management thus agreed that Borobudur Temple should be reopened.

President Joko Jokowi Widodo officially canceled plans to increase tickets for one of the world’s seven wonders in Magelang, Central Java, to Rp750,000. This was conveyed by Minister of Public Works and Housing Basuki Hadimuljono at the Jakarta Presidential Palace, on June 14, 2022.

As widely reported, the plan to hike the entry fee met with public protests. Criticism arose from religious leaders, activists, to business actors, especially micro, small, and medium enterprises.

Sandiaga Uno said the final trial phase had been carried out on Sunday, February 5, 2023, with the visit of ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2023 delegates. The event was organized by the Tourism and Creative Economy Ministry in tandem with Traveloka.
