M4.3 Earthquake Hits West Java on Wednesday Night

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Some residents of Garut and Bandung in West Java on Wednesday evening claims to have felt a minor earthquake at 22:57 WIB (Western Indonesia Time), which was confirmed by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) as a magnitude 4.3 earthquake.

The agency’s Tangerang station head, Hartanto, explained in a statement that the quake is categorized as a shallow earthquake that is caused by activities detected from the Garsela Fault. So far, the damages the quake caused is yet to be known.

BMKG reported that it was felt in the Pasirwangi and Cisurupan regions within Garut at the IV MMI scale.

The agency recorded up to six earthquakes that occurred which could be felt throughout Wednesday, January 31, that were scattered across regions, in Dieng, Central Java, for an earthquake measuring M1.8.

There was also an earthquake in Cipanas, Cianjur, that was measured at Magnitude 2,7. Earthquakes also occurred in Ransiki and Oransbari in West Papua with a magnitude of M4.4, while an M4.6 earthquake shoock Sekincau, and the last one was in Garut (M4.3).
