TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japanese government disbursed funds totaling 17.1 billion yen or around Rp2 trillion for the joint crediting mechanism (JCM), a bilateral project between Japan and its partners including Indonesia and 24 other countries. The program is aimed at reducing carbon emissions.

“The Japanese government prepares around 18 billion yen (Rp2.1 trillion) for three years,” said Japan Embassy’s First Secretary for Energy and Natural Resources Hiroshi Nishimoto in Jakarta, Thursday, January 19, 2023.

He said the funds will not only be used in Indonesia. “It can be used worldwide, not only for Indonesia,” Hiroshi added.

The collaboration between the Indonesian and Japanese governments to lower carbon emissions was initially signed in August 2013 between the Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Since the JCM project started in the country, the government claimed to have suppressed emissions by 56,254 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.

The project that contributed to the largest reduction in carbon emissions was the Utility Facility Operation Optimization Technology implemented by Azbil Co. and PT Pertamina, which managed to cut emissions up to 34,956 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent.
