TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The series of aftershocks in Jayapura, Papua, since the main earthquake measured at magnitude 5.4 on January 2, 2023, has not yet subsided.

The latest record from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) states that the most recent earthquake in the area occurred on the evening of Wednesday, January 18, which was measured at the magnitude of 4.4 with the strongest vibration intensity on the MMI III scale.

As of this morning, Thursday 19 January, the BMKG recorded a total of 762 aftershocks in Jayapura with 62 instances where the ground was physically felt shaking.

Due to the frequent quakes that happened in the Papua region, the BMKG had to issue a notice for locals explaining that the high tide in the region’s coastlines is not a sign of a tsunami.

The agency initially announced a warning that most of the Indonesian coastal areas will likely experience coastal flooding from January 20-23 that is caused by the super new moon that coincides with the perigee on Saturday, January 21.
