TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Deputy Governor of West Java Uu Ruzhanul Ulum prohibited the sales of liquid nitrogen-infused snacks, known as chiki ngebul or chikibul in the province, following the study results that such snacks are harmful to the body.

“I ban sales of chikibul in any form because it is clearly harmful,” he said after visiting a child who was a victim of snack poisoning in Ciawang Village, Leuwisari District, Tasikmalaya Regency, Thursday, January 12, 2023.

Uu instructed all health centers in each sub-district to inspect every snack sold at schools in order to ensure no food contains toxic substances.

“Puskesmas (community health centers) must monitor traders. At least once a month, take samples from food sold in schools and test their ingredients [to confirm] whether they are dangerous or not,” he underlined.

Uu also urged school principals and teachers to routinely supervise traders in their school environment. The threat of dangerous food in schools, he emphasized, must be the concern of all parties.

The public was also asked to supervise street snacks sold in their areas by asking traders directly about the types and ingredients they use for the snack.

“So don't let it pass. When there are traders, ask them what food they are selling, what the ingredients are,” said Uu.

West Java Deputy Governor thus hoped that the incident of food poisoning caused by children's snacks will not recur in the future. He expected all traders in schools to take part in counseling related to food safety. “This is important so they know which ingredients are safe for consumption and not.”
