TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is still recording aftershocks in Jayapura, Papua following the 4.9 magnitude earthquake that rocked the city on Monday, January 2. As of Thursday morning, there have been 387 aftershocks, 41 of which with tremors felt by residents.

A map uploaded to the BMKG's social media account showed that the majority of the aftershocks were centered at sea. The chart shows no downtrend in the intensity of the aftershocks.

Last night, there was even another earthquake with a magnitude of 4.9.

The BMKG's head of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center, Daryono, said that there have been four destructive earthquakes in Jayapura over the past 52 years.

The first one was in January 1971 with a magnitude of 7.3 and then in July 1979 with a magnitude of 5.3.

Sixteen years later in December 1995 Jayapura was struck with a magnitude 6.5 earthquake. The most recent before this week's earthquake struck on October 28, 2017 with a magnitude 4.7.
