TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) set up eight emergency tents in Saronge Kidul, Ciputri Village, Pacet District, Cianjur Regency. The tent was set up to be used as a temporary classroom for hundreds of students affected by the Cianjur earthquake that occurred in November 2022.

Deputy Chairperson of PMI Cianjur, Frida Laila Yahya, stated that the tents were lent temporarily due to the start of a new school year. Several schools' conditions made it impossible for students to study there as the earthquake heavily damaged the facilities.

"To support the teaching and learning process run smoothly this week, PMI is providing tents that can be used as temporary classrooms while waiting for repairs on the damaged school facilities," she said on Wednesday, January 4, 2023.

In the last few weeks, her group has received many requests for tents from school-related parties starting from the elementary, junior high and Islamic boarding schools because their facilities have also been affected by the earthquake.

"We proposed the establishment of tents to provide the needs of schools in Cianjur, both public and private. Incidentally, we received a limited number of large-sized tents from the PMI headquarters which can be offered to schools in need," she said.

The Citamiang Elementary School teacher in Ciputri Village, Pacet District, Neuis Hendrayati, said that the installation of eight tents from PMI was very helpful for a temporary classroom that could accommodate 262 students that were not able to go to school due to the Cianjur earthquake.

"Emergency tents for classrooms are urgently needed because this week is the start of the second semester and the teaching and learning process has to be held face-to-face. Almost 80 percent of the school buildings are damaged. Fortunately, PMI provides the school with tents," said Hendrayati.

The 5.6 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Cianjur, Monday, November 21, 2022, resulted in various school buildings collapsing. The earthquake also damaged the school facilities, such as the IT room, desks and chairs, library, and other school assets.
