TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Acting Governor Heru Budi Hartono said the government is still finalizing the concept of a giant sea wall which is expected to be a solution to tackle tidal floods along the coast of North Jakarta.

“If we want Jakarta to be safe [from tidal flooding] for 100 years, we must be able to build a giant sea wall and a coastal embankment,” said Heru Budi at the City Hall, Central Jakarta, Tuesday, January 3, 2023.

He explained the National Development Planning Ministry or the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) is finishing the project concept. “After this [leaders’ meeting], we will go to Bappenas to have FGD (focus group discussion) with relevant ministries,” said Budi who is also Head of the Presidential Secretariat.

The ministries in question are the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK).

Heru Budi today held a leaders’ meeting on the embankment project as part of the National Capital Integrated Coastal Development (NCICD) program to sharpen the concept of the dam construction which will work in synergy with other provinces and the central government.

According to him, the city government and the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (PUPR) are responsible for the construction of the coastal embankment. Meanwhile, the construction of the giant sea wall must be adjusted to the spatial concept of provinces outside Jakarta.

Earlier, the Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) on Sunday, January 1, 2023, issued an early warning of potential tidal flooding on January 3-10, 2023 in the northern coastal area of Jakarta.
