Jakarta Police Ban Firecrackers on New Year's Eve at Sudirman-Thamrin Area

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Metro Police Chief Inspector General Fadil Imran has banned the public from setting off firecrackers while celebrating New Year's Eve 2023.

It applies along the streets of Sudirman-Thamrin on new year’s eve. "Firecrackers and the like are prohibited, throughout Sudirman-Thamrin," said Fadil Imran as quoted by Antara, Friday, December 30, 2022.

Fadil said the firecrackers would make other residents who are celebrating New Year's Eve uncomfortable. "It will be uncomfortable because the powder falls, it can also cause a fire and so on," he said.

New Year's Eve celebrations were held again after two years of ban due to the Covid-19 pandemic. During the two years, the Sudirman-Thamrin area was even closed and even gatherings were prohibited by the government.

This year, the government is holding a New Year's celebration by building entertainment stages spread across five cities and the Thousand Islands Regency.

Jakarta Provincial Government chose Taman Mini Indonesia Indah as the center of the 2023 New Year's Eve celebration that carries the theme "Live Jakarta, the Rise of ASEAN Leadership in 2023".

Jakarta also provides entertainment stages along Jalan Sudirman-Thamrin, check these locations:

  1. Youths Night (Malam Muda-Mudi), entertainment stages at:

- Pos Bloc area

- Sarinah area

- Bundaran HI MRT Station area

- Jl. Imam Bonjol Bundaran HI

- Da Vinci Penthouse area

- SCBD area

- FX Sudirman area

- Pemuda Membangun statue area

- M Bloc Space area

  1. New Year's Eve Festival 2023, at:

- Thamrin 10, Central Jakarta

- North Jakarta Mayor Office yard

- West Jakarta Mayor Office yard

- Setu Babakan Betawi Cultural Center, South Jakarta

- Old Shanghai, East Jakarta

- Untung Jawa Island at the Thousand Islands

  1. National Monument (Monas) area is open for public until 1 a.m. on January 1, 2023. There will be a dancing water fountain performance on New Year's Eve at 7:30 p.m. and colorful lights attraction at 6 p.m.
  2. The Kota Tua (Old Town) area will operate until 1 a.m. and there will be attractions by the Old Town communities.
  3. Ancol Dreamland will also hold several attractions that can be an option for the Jakarta people to celebrate new year's eve, such as parade, art bazaar, street art performance, live music, and fireworks attractions.
