TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) stated that unusually heavy rainfall like what happened in 2020 could recur during extreme weather. The agency head Isnawa Adji thus appealed to the public to be vigilant.

High precipitation at the beginning of the 2020 new year caused major flooding in the capital and a number of neighborhood regions.

“BMKG (the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency) has released information that late December and early January are the peaks of extreme weather. So, we need to be vigilant,” Isnawa said when met at the Jakarta BPBD Office, Gambir, Central Jakarta, Thursday, December 29, 2022.

He also explained the impact of extreme weather hazards on the city and its vicinity areas, which include tornadoes, fallen trees, floods, and even landslides.

“So we have to anticipate these. Don't let this extreme weather cause problems in Jakarta. Floods may trigger traffic jams, landslides are also dangerous on river banks,” Isnawa said.

Yesterday, Jakarta BPBD highlighted that based on the BMKG analysis, there is significant potential for atmospheric dynamics from late December until early January which can increase rainfall intensity in a number of areas of Indonesia, especially during the Christmas and New Year holidays.

BMKG predicts potential rainfall at a medium-heavy intensity which may be accompanied by lightning and strong winds between December 25, 2022, and January 1, 2023, in the Jakarta area,” said the Jakarta BPBD.
