TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - West Nusa Tenggara’s Mataram City provincial government will officially skip celebrating the upcoming 2023 New Year’s eve in accordance with the request of the city’s mayor Mohan Roliskana, who intends to show sympathy for Indonesian regions that have been hit by a series of natural disasters lately.

"Indonesia currently mourns due to the number of disasters that struck, from the earthquake at Cianjur, Garut, Jember, up to the eruption of Mount Semeru. So there will not be any celebrations in welcoming 2023," said the Head of the Mataram City tourism agency Nizar Denny Cahyadi on Tuesday, December 13, Antaranews reported.

The city annually celebrates the change of the year at the local Sankareang Field, which would become a major attraction for locals due to its festive activities.

Instead, the city's government official advised people to celebrate New Year's Eve at their homes by holding gatherings with family, neighbors, and friends. "You can hold barbeques and strengthen family ties," Nizar said.
