Novel Baswedan Invites People to Closely Monitor Corruption Cases

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former investigator at Corruption Eradication Commission or KPK, Novel Baswedan, asked the public to closely prevent corrupt behavior which can be done by monitoring someone who has been suspected of committing acts of corruption.

"Prevention is done so that people then find it difficult or unable to commit corruption," said Novel in an Anticorruption Day event in Jakarta Friday, Dec. 9.

Novel said that people need to get educated about corruption. He reasoned that someone who has knowledge about anticorruption would not want to actions that could harm the country. "And education is carried out so that even when people have the opportunity they don't want to commit corruption," said Novel.

In addition, Novel Baswedan assesses that the acts of corruption have spread to various state agencies. This is based on corruption cases that have occurred in Indonesia since the founding of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in 2004.

"We can see the practice in almost all ministries and institutions," he said.

Nevertheless, Novel Baswedan revealed that at present, many state institutions establishing small organizations to eradicate corruption cases.

Novel stated that currently many law enforcement officers are involved in corrupt practices. Therefore, he said that the apparatus can be followed up to be filed to be imposed with the applicable law.

In his oration, Novel Baswedan considered eradicating corruption an ideal effort. "Apart from that, we have to see that there are prevention efforts being made from upstream to downstream," he remarked.
