West Java Earthquake; Search Team Dispatched to Find 151 Missing People

TEMPO.CO, Cianjur - A joint search and rescue team continues to look for survivors beneath the rubbles of houses that were severely damaged by the magnitude 5.6 earthquake that hit Cianjur, West Java. So far, 151 people were reported missing following the initial quake.

Head of the Bandung Search and Rescue Office Jumaril said there is 796 personnel dispatched to 12 sub-districts affected by the earthquake to search for residents who were reported missing and distributing aid.

Two teams have been dispatched for this; Potensi SAR Team will map out areas where potential survivors are and send information to the National Search and Rescue Agency Team (Basarnas) to conduct the rescue.

“Survivors will be taken to the Cianjur General Hospital with ambulances,” he added.

He said that SAR officers would also distribute disaster aid using a helicopter to reach places that cannot be reached via road vehicles.

Until now, the earthquake that devastated Cianjur was recorded to have caused 268 deaths. A total of 122 bodies have been identified with 151 reportedly missing while 1,083 were injured and 58,362 taking refuge at camps.
