TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasted that in the next four days, the frequency of the earthquake in Cianjur Regency, West Java, will decrease. The agency recorded 145 aftershocks as of 16:00 local time today, November 22.

The shakings were mostly at a mild intensity and only felt by a few people. Besides, they could be detected solely by tools.

“The strongest aftershock has a magnitude of 4.2 and the smallest has 1.2. So the BMKG estimates that within the next four more days, inshallah, there will be fewer aftershocks. Inshallah, it will end,” said BMKG head Dwikorita Karnawati at a press conference in Cianjur, Tuesday, November 22, 2022.

She also warned of potential collateral hazards, including landslides, as the region is entering the peak of the rainy season. “Materials from landslides in many points can dam river valleys on the upper slopes, and if rains keep falling, the rainwater dam will push the piles of landslides and will eventually break down as a flash flood,” she explained.

Dwikorita thus underlined that it is very important to control the material soil or wood that blocks the flow of the river on the upper slopes.

The earthquake in Cianjur occurred at 13:21 local time, Monday, November 21, 2022. It was centered 10 km southwest of the regency with a depth of 10 km and had no potential to trigger a tsunami.
