TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Head of the Bandung Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) station, Teguh Rahayu, on Tuesday announced 125 aftershocks shook the region of Cianjur in West Java following the initial magnitude 5.6 earthquake on Monday that killed at least 162 people.
Some of the aftershocks, Rahayu explains, originated from the Cimandiri Fault which is geographically within the reach of the West Bandung Regency and Cimahi City.
BMKG earthquake distribution map shows that most aftershocks have gathered around the main earthquake epicenter, which is located in Cianjur.
According to the Head of the BMKG Earthquake and Tsunami Mitigation Division, Daryono, many aftershocks are common in shallow crustal earthquakes. "Because the rock is brittle, many aftershocks will follow," he said, Monday, November 21.
According to him, the BMKG cannot confirm nor predict how many and how long the aftershocks will still occur. "We also dare not say this condition is safe," he said.
