TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Commission D of the Jakarta Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD Jakarta) urged the Highway Agency (Bina Marga) to thoroughly examine the project to build a sidewalk worth Rp171 billion in the 2023 State Budget plan.

"Our emphasis is that there must be a concept that the construction of the sidewalk can be effective and not create traffic jams," said Head of Commission D od DPRD Jakarta, Ida Mahmudah in a written statement, Wednesday, November 16, 2022.

In-depth studies on the sidewalk construction, said Ida Mahmudah, need to be carried out so as not to cause traffic jams. "Many constructions of broadening sidewalks in Jakarta reduce road volume," she said.

According to her, the budget for the construction of the sidewalk will be used by the Highway agency to support several integrated transportation regions.

DPRD Jakarta reminded that in post-development, the Highway Agency can cooperate with the Jakarta Public Order Agency (Satpol PP) to undertake surveillance.

"This is one of Commission D's recommendations that the Highway Agency must cooperate with Satpol PP to put it all in order, so the construction of the sidewalk is in accordance with its purpose. I will deliver this statement at the next meeting," she said.

Head of the Jakarta Highway Agency, Hari Nugroho, detailed that the budget will be used for the construction of sidewalks in Mangga Besar, Gunung Sahari Raya, area around the Jakarta International Stadium (JIS), Mangga Dua Raya, Daan Mogot, and the northern segment of Mas Mansyur.

He agreed that the purpose of building this sidewalk is to make commuters more comfortable in going to public transportation such as TransJakarta bus stop, JakLingko, MRT, BRT and LRT stations.

"So the relevance of this sidewalk is for mobility access to public transportation, especially to the TJ (TransJakarta) bus stop and provide people's convenience to public transportation. This precisely could support in reducing traffic jams, if we don't build it, there won't be a lot of people using public transportation," he said.
