TEMPO.CO, Colombo - The Sri Lankan government on Wednesday, Nov. 16, kicked off a pilot project to provide driving licenses for light vehicles to the deaf community.

The pilot project started in the Gampaha district, Sri Lanka's second most populous district.

The cabinet of ministers recently approved the proposal following a request made by the Sri Lanka Central Federation of the Deaf, which has been campaigning for the move for nearly 40 years.

Depending on the success of the pilot program, driving licenses for light vehicles will be issued to about 300,000 members of the Sri Lanka Central Federation of the Deaf.
