TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Ukraine foreign affairs minister Dmytro Kuleba amidst the 40th and 41st ASEAN Summit in Phnom Penh on Thursday signed the ‘Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia’ (TAC). Ukraine has become the 50th nation to sign the treaty that aims to promote perpetual peace, everlasting amity, and cooperation with ASEAN members.

Representing ASEAN was the Deputy Prime Minister of Cambodia and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Prak Sokhonn. The signing was also witnessed by other ASEAN Foreign Ministers and the ASEAN Secretary-General, Antaranews reported.

This treaty was first signed by ASEAN members namely Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines in 1976. Countries outside ASEAN members that have signed the TAC are China, India, Japan, the United States, Russia, South Korea, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, Egypt, Peru, and the European Union.

Countries that sign the TAC are guided by the basic principles of holding onto mutual respect for independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and the national identity of all nations.

Those that have signed also have the right to maintain their national establishment which is free from interference, attacks, or coercion from external parties; Do not interfere with the domestic affairs of each member; peaceful settlement of differences or disputes; avoid threats or use of violence, and effective cooperation among members.
