Jakarta 'Car Free Day' Drones Catch Litterers In the Act

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Jakarta provincial government on Sunday officially operated 11 drones spread across a number of locations that are within the city’s routine 'car free day' event. These drones – for a couple of minutes – roam the skies to catch litterers in the act and impose fines up to Rp500,000.
However, according to Yogi Ikhwan, representative of Jakarta’s Environmental Agency, the amount of fine against those who are guilty of littering will depend on the discretions of field officials. The drones themselves are provided and operated collectively by the city’s subunits.
“It will depend on their socio-economic status, their age, or for those who did not bring cash will be told to collect trash,” said Ikhwan on November 6, Antaranews reported.
Ikhwan claims this type of drone surveillance is effective in reducing the number of litterers and strengthens the field observations conducted by officials posted across a number of spots throughout the car-free day area.
The trash that is often thrown away carelessly by people were mainly plastic packaging waste and cigarette butts.
